THIS MONTH OF OCTOBER IS SIDS AWARENESS MONTH

From the Sids Network:
What Is SIDS?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the "sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history"(Willinger, et al., 1991).
What Are the Most Common Characteristics of SIDS?
Most researchers now believe that babies who die of SIDS are born with one or more conditions that make them especially vulnerable to stresses that occur in the normal life of an infant, including both internal and external influences. SIDS occurs in all types of families and is largely indifferent to race or socioeconomic level. SIDS is unexpected, usually occurring in otherwise apparently healthy infants from 1 month to 1 year of age. Most deaths from SIDS occur by the end of the sixth month, with the greatest number taking place between 2 and 4 months of age. A SIDS death occurs quickly and is often associated with sleep, with no signs of suffering, . More deaths are reported in the fall and winter (in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres) and there is a 60- to 40-percent male-to-female ratio. A death is diagnosed as SIDSonly after all other alternatives have been eliminated: SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion.
What SIDS Is and What SIDS Is Not SIDS Is:

the major cause of death in infants from 1 month to 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months

sudden and silent--the infant was seemingly healthy

currently, unpredictable and unpreventable

a death that occurs quickly, often associated with sleep and with no signs of suffering

determined only after an autopsy, an examination of the death scene, and a review of the clinical history

designated as a diagnosis of exclusion

a recognized medical disorder listed in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9)

an infant death that leaves unanswered questions, causing intense grief for parents and families
SIDS Is Not:

caused by vomiting and choking, or minor illnesses such as colds or infections

caused by the diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT) vaccines, or other immunizations

contagious

child abuse

the cause of every unexpected infant death

WHAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT SIDS:
In most all cases, the babies whom die of this syndrome do not appear to have struggled or suffered in any way.
Most occurrences happen within the winter months with January being the most likely time for an infant to
fall victim to SIDS.

BABY CENTER SAYS

Night isn't the only time that SIDS strikes, however. If your infant is in daycare, it's important to know that about 20 percent of SIDS deaths happen in childcare settings, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics in 2000.

This is a surprisingly high number when you consider that babies spend much less time sleeping at daycare than they do at home.

GOOGLE HEALTH SAYS

The following have been linked to an increased risk of SIDS:
• Babies who sleep on their stomachs
• Babies who are around cigarette smoke while in the womb or after being born
• Babies who sleep in the same bed as their parents
• Babies who have soft bedding in the crib
• Multiple birth babies (being a twin, triplet, etc.)
• Premature babies
• Babies who have a brother or sister who had SIDS
• Mothers who smoke or use illegal drugs
• Teen mothers
• Short time period between pregnancies
• Late or no prenatal care
• Situations of poverty

HOW TO GO ABOUT BRINGING LAUGHTER TO BABIES

HOW TO GO ABOUT BRINGING LAUGHTER TO BABIES?
(Multiple sources are included in this file)

Bring a toy to life. One of the pleasures of playing with babies is taking advantage of their inability to distinguish real and imaginary objects. Grab his favorite teddy bear or puppet, and instill life into the toy with your silly animation.

ENVIRONMENT FOR PARENT-CHILD OBSERVATION:
For today, prepare an interesting environment using objects and
activities that the parents and children have enjoyed together during
past sessions. Some suggestions are: toys that have an element of
surprise such as a jack-in-the-box; mirrors to make funny faces;
puppet box with puppets; music area with audio tapes of a
variety of songs where parents and children can do silly dances and
books.

Give them toys. Leave your sibling with an adult and loads of toys all around. Let him/her play as much as they want. That has to make them happy, and thus, make them smile!

WONDERTIME says:
http://wondertime.go.com/learning/child-development/stages-baby-3-6months.html
Become more coordinated. While infants do not generally develop much fine motor control at this age, they definitely perfect their ability to bring objects to their mouths, a skill that bothers some parents, but which actually serves a great purpose. It is entirely expected that babies will explore the world around them through their mouths! In addition, 3- to 6-month-olds are able to play with and be amused by toys put within their reach, and by 6 months, most can pass objects from hand to hand.

Enjoy making sounds. Not only do babies this age like to laugh and squeal with pleasure and excitement, but they perfect their ability to gurgle, coo, and blow raspberries. Some begin to make consonant sounds (n, d, p, b), most can link sounds with the objects that made them, and by the time they reach 6 months of age, often start to actually imitate sounds.

Why Bamboo?

I have recently had the question asked why bamboo and thought I would answer it.

Bamboo is softer than the softest cotton, Bamboo fabric has a natural sheen to the surface and feels similar to cashmere. The fabric absorbs water 3-4 times better than cotton, keeping skin comfortable, rather than sticky, in hot weather.
Bamboo apparel is thermal regulating, odor resistant, anti-static and will keep you cooler and drier in the heat of summer and warmer in cold temperatures.

Bamboo, a renewable resource, is grown without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bamboo is one of the world's most prolific and fastest-growing plants, and is able to reach maturity in about four years, compared to the typical 25 to 70 years for commercial tree species in the U.S. Though most people are generally familiar with this beautiful and graceful plant, the average person is usually astounded when learning that there are more than 1000 documented uses of bamboo.

Bamboo is nature's most sustainable resource and is naturally regenerative. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass, with an extensive root system that sends out an average of four to six new shoots per year, naturally replenishing itself and growing to heights of 60 feet or more.

In Asia, bamboo has been used in the traditional hand-made production of paper for centuries. Now, through modern manufacturing processes, bamboo pulp is capable of producing viscose from bamboo for use in yarn and fabric. Certain species of bamboo have the tensile strength equivalent to that of steel.

Please check out our new boys line Axel and Hudson. Axel and Hudson shirts are made with bamboo materials.

A Little MILK and TEA TIME Makes All the Difference

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 12th, 2010, with the help of Milk Money Children’s Boutique, Moments in Time Photography, Tea Collection Clothing and the helpful hands of our surrounding community, we were able to have a delightful fundraising event. With the results of our Cutest Kid Search placing Little Miss Riley Norkett in first place followed by young Miss Riley Seldon in second place and young Mr.Braiden receiving third place, we were able to reveal the winner’s before many spectators at our Tea Party affair. We had several avid guests attend the small celebration, with the accompaniment of fruit teas and other refreshments during our informative, yet fashionable trunk show to introduce the Fall sneak peek of Tea Collection designs for children. Thanks to all the participation from all whom were involved in this affair, we were able to raise an eye-lifting $1200 to benefit the charity of our choice. And this year, Milk Money along with Moments in Time has selected to benefit the hopeful kids of Classroom Central’s Project! An organization dedicated to supplying school supplies to the needy communities around Charlotte.“We want to ensure the promise and hopes for young kids of our community, and look forward to more events that will help flourish our neighborhoods,” comments Mrs. Cherita Thomas of Milk Money; and the fun will not stop here! Look for more projects and events happening around your area and be a part of Milk Money’s ABC (A Better Cause) movement to get involved with the little ones which make up our society and our future!

Here at Milk Money you can find this type of material in abundance, along with other similar snug and cozy comfortable feeling and organic materials. We have in stock some beautiful hot pinks, baby pinks and deep reds should you be motivated by the month of love for this season.
